What are the Benefits of Kyphoplasty?

The side effects of a compression fracture can be debilitating, discouraging, and painful. Surgery may help to correct a compression fracture, but a surgical procedure comes with risks and side effects of its own, as well as the inconvenience of an extensive recovery period. Patients who want rapid and reliable relief from a compression fracture in Sewell, New Jersey with minimal downtime may be excited to learn more about the benefits of minimally invasive kyphoplasty, such as:

  • Improves posture
  • Relieves pain associated with compression fracture
  • Increases mobility
  • No incisions required
  • Minimally invasive
  • Uses local anesthesia (no general anesthesia required)
  • Patients can walk out of the office right after treatment
  • Minimal downtime

Spinal Fracture Procedure

Kyphoplasty is a procedure that can eliminate pain caused by a spinal compression fracture. It can also create stability for the bone and rebuild some or all of the spinal height that may have been lost because of the fracture. Kyphosis is a curvature in the spine that can be caused by a compression fracture. One of the main benefits of kyphoplasty is the correction of kyphosis to restore proper posture.

For this procedure, a small incision is made in the patient’s back through which a narrow tube is placed. A special type of balloon will then be placed through the tube into the vertebra. The balloon is then gently inflated to shift the fracture to its normal position. This creates a cavity within the vertebrae which is then filled with a cement-like material, known as polymethylmethacrylate, to secure the bone. Our experienced pain specialists perform kyphoplasty procedures as a treatment for spinal fractures to eliminate pain and restore the proper positioning of vertebrae.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

A good candidate for kyphoplasty would be an individual who has experienced a recent spinal compression fracture. A kyphoplasty procedure cannot correct long-standing spinal deformities, so it is important to seek medical attention once you notice the effects of a spinal fracture or curvature in the spine. Most commonly spinal compression fractures are a symptom of osteoporosis, but there are other conditions that can cause them. During your consultation, Dr. Raeson Hodge will look at your medical history, symptoms, and spinal x-rays to decide if you are a candidate for kyphoplasty.

How Is Kyphoplasty Done?

Kyphoplasty can be completed as an outpatient or inpatient procedure in the office and under a general or local anesthesia. Dr. Raeson Hodge will start by making a small incision in the back and then insert the tube and the balloon with the guidance of x-ray images. After the balloon is in position, it will be inflated and removed. The last step is inserting the polymethylmethacrylate into the cavity.

The entire process can take up to an hour for each vertebra that is being treated.

What to Expect After Kyphoplasty

Post-treatment instructions will be delivered by Dr. Raeson Hodge, and patients will need to attend a follow-up appointment so that he can adjust their treatment plan if needed.

Patients can begin to notice pain relief within one or two days following their treatment.

If the patient has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, there is a risk of receiving future spinal fractures after the kyphoplasty. In that case, other courses of treatment may be discussed with Dr. Raeson Hodge.

Helping You Restore Mobility

Kyphoplasty is an effective procedure that can reduce pain and spinal curvature that is associated with a compression fracture. At CRESCENT PAIN AND SPINE, Dr. Raeson Hodge can evaluate what underlying condition may be affecting your bones and can determine if kyphoplasty is right for you.
